So-called “Republican” New York 21 congressional candidate Robert Smullen is a complete fraud who has been voting with radical socialist Zohran Mamdani on the biggest issues facing the MAGA movement, such as climate change, DEI, trans rights, and even helping advance the left’s lawfare used to “Get Trump.” On Tuesday, Smullen will be facing off against Trump-endorsed Anthony Constantino in the GOP congressional primary.
The most unforgivable aspect of Robert Smullen’s voting record as a member of the New York Assembly centers around his vote with Zohran Mamdani, which empowered E. Jean Carroll to go after President Trump. In 2022, Robert Smullen voted with Zohran Mamdani to advance the Adult Survivors Act in the New York Assembly. Shortly after the bill became law, the Washington Post and CNN ran headlines reading: “Writer E. Jean Carroll sues Trump under new N.Y. sexual assault law.”
Ironically, during a recent New York 21 debate, Smullen compared his personal felony charge to the political weaponization against Trump, cringingly saying:
“Sure. Well, just like President Trump was persecuted by law enforcement for his taxes. It’s happened repeatedly. The system was weaponized against me in my primary campaign in 2018.”
Obviously, the major issue with Smullen’s statement is that he voted with Zohran Mamdani and the New York State elected Democrats to empower E. Jean Carroll to “Get Trump.”
Smullen’s general assembly voting record only grows more grotesque from here. In 2021, Robert Smullen voted with Zohran Mamdani in the New York Assembly to give trans sex workers rights. After A03355 passed, Zohran boasted on X, writing in 2021:
“Today, I’m ecstatic to say that the Assembly has passed A03355 with a 105-44 vote, repealing the #WalkingWhileTrans (section 240.37 of NYS penal law). Advocates, like TS Candii, have been fighting for this for years and it hasn’t been easy.” The official language of A03355 reads: “Repeals provisions relating to loitering for the purpose of engaging in a prostitution offense; makes technical corrections relating thereto.”
In June 2022, Robert Smullen voted with Zohran Mamdani in the New York Assembly to fund trans causes using public taxpayer dollars. The disgusting bill summary of S0884 reads:
“Establishes the transgender and gender non-binary (TGNB) wellness and equity program; establishes a fund for such program.”
Smullen also voted with Zohran Mamdani in the New York legislature on A08272, which read: “Replaces all instances of the words councilman or councilmen with the words council member or council members.”
It’s also important to note that Smullen has also posted “Happy Pride” on his Instagram page, showing that Smullen is more like a democrat when it comes to trans rights.
In June 2023, Robert Smullen voted with Zohran Mamdani in the New York Assembly to force DEI onto New Yorkers. Smullen and Mamdani voted to enact a DEI planning office within the state of New York, with the bill summary reading:
“Establishes the office of racial equity and social justice to act as the official state planning and coordinating office for changes in policy, practice, and allocation of state resources so that race or social justice constructs do not predict an individual’s success, while also improving opportunities and outcomes for all people, and performing all necessary and appropriate services required to fulfill these duties.”
During their time in the New York State Assembly, Robert Smullen also voted with Zohran Mamdani on a bill that forces New York realtors to attend DEI training classes. The New York State Legislature bill summary reads: “Requires real estate brokers to receive two hours of cultural competency.”
Smullen recently bragged on X that local Republican parties in New York were endorsing him because he fought wokeness in Albany. Smullen wrote: “
Lewis and Schoharie County Republicans know this is a defining moment for our country. I have never backed down from the woke left in Albany, and I will not back down from them in Washington.”
Smullen’s votes with Zohran Mamdani to implement DEI are not a fight against wokeness. The lies Smullen has told New York voters are shameful. Given Smullen’s positions, one has to wonder why so many elected New York Republicans endorsed or donated to him.
Like Zohran Mamdani and the radical left, Robert Smullen has embraced the Green New Deal. In May 2024, Smullen voted with Mamdani in the New York Assembly to essentially install Green New Deal mandates on New Yorkers. The bill text summary from the New York Assembly website reads that Smullen and Mamdani voted yea for: “Establishes a chief sustainability officer to coordinate efforts across state agencies and other state government entities to address climate change mitigation and climate sustainability efforts.”
Smullen, like Mamdani, also apparently loves windmills. Smullen once posted a video to his official Instagram account of a windmill farm. This is clearly a pro-windmill farm video, as the footage shows all the windmills rotating and working, for once. President Trump has long been a critic of windmills, referring to them as an energy scam. Smullen’s Zohran Mamdani-like green energy policies are probably why Trump endorsed Smullen’s opponent, Anthony Constantino.
It is also important to note that Smullen celebrates similar holidays as Mamdani. In 2025, Robert Smullen wished New Yorkers a happy May Day. May Day is a socialist holiday celebrated by elected Democrats. Zohran Mamdani also wished New Yorkers a happy May Day in 2025, posting a video of himself blocking traffic for social justice.
Robert Smullen has teamed up with one of the most extreme socialists in Albany over and over again while lying to voters about “fighting woke.” Anyone with a voting record like this does not deserve to be a GOP member of Congress.
