Chuck Schumer and his Senate Democrats received a big blow to their 2026 hopes of retaking the United States Senate as Michigan United States Senator Gary Peters announced that he will not seek reelection in 2026. Loomer Unleashed has confronted Peters multiple times over the past few weeks regarding his disgusting behavior toward Pete Hegseth. Peter’s retirement is yet more proof that elected Democrats are in the process of losing the rustbelt to President Trump and his MAGA policies.
Senator Peter’s statement announcing his retirement read, “When I was first elected to Congress in 2008, I always knew there would come a time to pass the torch to the next generation of public servants and allow them the opportunity to bring fresh energy and ideas to our nation’s capital. Our founding fathers envisioned members of Congress as citizens serving their country for a few terms and then returning to private life. I agree. After three terms in the House and two terms in the Senate, I believe now is time for me to write a few more paragraphs in my current chapter and turn over the reins. I will therefore not seek reelection in 2026.”
Loomer Unleashed is guilty of helping give Senator Peter’s a pretty rough go since the United States Senate returned in January. First, we asked Peters, “Why did you lie about Pete Hegseth canceling a meeting with you?”

During the 2024 election, Peters served as the chair of the DSCC, meaning Peters was key in the Senate Democrat’s messaging. Peters’s messaging of open borders did not click with voters, as outrage followed Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey’s refusal to answer Loomer Unleashed’s question, “Do you support Kamala Harris’s job as Biden’s Border Czar and her calls to defund the police and abolish ICE?”
Senator Casey ended up losing his reelection bid.
Holding Michigan is key for the Senate Democrats’ hopes of retaking the Senate in 2026. Without an incumbent on the ballot, the Democrats’ chances of holding Michigan have dropped, thus dropping the Senate Democrats’ chances of retaking the Senate in 2026. This stat is key as Senate Republicans retaining control of the Senate means President Trump will have four years to appoint the justices he wants onto America’s courts.
During the 2024 election, President Trump swept the Rust Belt states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Senator Peters’s retirement shows that entrenched Rust Belt elected Democrats no longer believe that they are a political force in the Rust Belt. Hopefully, Senate Republicans can take advantage of their ever-growing momentum by first confirming all of President Trump’s nominees and then holding control of the Senate in 2026, ensuring that President Trump has the allies needed in Congress to implement his MAGA agenda over these next four years.
