President Trump demanded on Sunday night that the House GOP fix Joe Biden and Ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s debt ceiling “problem.” Trump is correct to label June’s impending debt ceiling fight as Biden and McCarthy’s “problem” because Biden’s “COVID relief” and “infrastructure” laws, passed when Democrats controlled the House and Senate, resulted in billions added to America’s debt. In September 2023, Then-Speaker McCarthy worked with Democrats to raise the debt ceiling in a deal that expires in June 2025. McCarthy’s debt ceiling deal with Biden cost him his Speakership. Ironically, during the fall of 2023, Marjorie Taylor Greene defended Kevin McCarthy’s decision to raise the debt ceiling by insinuating nothing could be done about the debt ceiling issue until Trump got into office. Now, it is up to MTG and the House Republicans that backed McCarthy to fix their mess before Trump returns to office on January 20th.
In a post to TruthSocial on Sunday night, President Trump referred to Kevin McCarthy’s September 2023 decision to work with Democrats to reach a debt ceiling deal that expires in June of 2025 as one of the “dumbest political decisions made in years.” Trump wrote, “The extension of the Debt Ceiling by a previous Speaker of the House, a good man and a friend of mine, from this past September of the Biden Administration, to June of the Trump Administration, will go down as one of the dumbest political decisions made in years. There was no reason to do it – NOTHING WAS GAINED, and we got nothing for it – A major reason why that Speakership was lost. It was Biden’s problem, not ours. Now it becomes ours. I call it “1929” because the Democrats don’t care what our Country may be forced into. In fact, they would prefer “Depression” as long as it hurt the Republican Party. The Democrats must be forced to take a vote on this treacherous issue NOW, during the Biden Administration, and not in June. They should be blamed for this potential disaster, not the Republicans!”
Kevin McCarthy’s debt ceiling deal with Biden cost him his Speakership. McCarthy never got over losing the gavel as he financed primary opponents against those who voted to oust him. Rep. Nancy Mace, a member who voted to oust McCarthy over the debt ceiling deal because McCarthy lied to her about having a vote on a Balanced Budget Amendment, joined Laura Loomer’s Loomer Unleashed in March of 2024, explaining her firsthand experience of McCarthy’s bitterness, “My opponent is Kevin McCarthy’s “puppet.” She’d have to ask for his permission every time she votes. Not us, though, we’re a strong, fiscally conservative, independent voice, the people’s voice.”
Rep. Mace crushed her McCarthy-funded opponent, showing Trump voters anger with the former speaker’s policies.
It is important to note that when replying to Matt Gaetz’s post “Some of my wonderful conservative friends won’t be voting to #VacateMcCarthy They worry it might disrupt legislative business. I would remind them that the full scope of legislative work on the floor yesterday was…… Renaming 2 Post Offices.”
MTG insinuated that Kevin McCarthy deserved a pass because issues like the debt ceiling could not be solved until Trump is back in office, “I agree with you. We need serious change, but there is no plan and no one capable of even stepping up. Last time the Freedom Caucus threw out a Speaker, we ended up with Paul Ryan, who did not support President Trump’s agenda. Nothing can truly change until Trump is back in the White House.”
Hopefully, MTG and the other House Republicans who supported McCarthy can fulfill President Trump’s request and fix their debt ceiling issue before President Trump returns to office.
