On Saturday Jan. 6, the Michigan Republican Party (MRP) State Committee held a special meeting in which embattled MRP Chairwoman Kristina Karamo along with members of her inner circle such as MRP Attorney Dan Hartmann were removed from their positions. Karamo was voted out by 88 percent of state committee members who were present at the State Committee meeting. Despite being rejected by such an overwhelming majority, Karamo is, as expected, claiming the proceedings were illegitimate.
“Any claims that I have been removed as chair are false,” Karamo wrote in an email to Michigan Republican activists after the meeting, threatening “swift and appropriate action” against the individuals participating in the “conspiracy to illegally conduct MIGOP business.”
However, when reviewing the MRP bylaws and the trail of documentation preceding the meeting, it is clear the State Committee’s removal of Karamo was done lawfully and appropriately. The State Committee members created the meeting by special request, meeting the necessary threshold of one-third of the signatures from individuals on the State Committee. The request was submitted with the signatures and the stated purpose of the meeting while giving the Chair the necessary 15 days to respond.
These provisions abide by the “Special Meetings” provision in Article VI, Section B of the MRP Bylaws, which read as follows:
“Special meetings of the Committee may be called by the Chairman when the business of the Committee requires the same, and the Chairman shall call a special meeting of the Committee on written request of one-third of the members of the Committee, jointly or severally, within 15 days after such written request has been filed with the Chairman. Upon failure to do so, any such member can give notice five (5) days before such meeting. Notices of special meetings shall state the purpose of such meetings.”

After the State Committee followed the appropriate procedure to call for this special meeting, Karamo broke the bylaws by refusing to uphold her duty to convene the State Committee meeting. She instead responded by hastily scheduling another State Committee meeting a week later, on Saturday Jan. 13, and attempting to force State Committee members, who are volunteers, paying out of pocket and driving across the state to attend these meetings, to choose one meeting or the other – in a desperate attempt to prevent the Jan. 6 meeting from obtaining a quorum.
Karamo’s stunt failed and yesterday’s State Committee meeting obtained a quorum despite her best efforts to undermine the meeting. A quorum is defined under Article VI, Section C of the MRP Bylaws as “a majority of the total membership of the Committee present in person or by proxy shall constitute a quorum to transact all business of the Committee except where the action of the Committee requires a larger number of members as specially set forth in these Bylaws.”
Article 3, Section I of the MRP Bylaws states: “If a District member is not present for a particular meeting and has not provided for a proxy, the District Chairman, or in his absence, the remaining members present from the absent member’s Congressional District, may select a registered voter from their Congressional District to fill the vacancy from that meeting only.”
Because the State Committee meeting achieved a quorum and 88 percent of the committee members present voted to remove Karamo, the vote is LAWFUL, and Karamo is effectively no longer the MRP Chair. Article G, Section 2 of the MRP Bylaws makes that reality abundantly clear:
“Any officer may be removed as an officer and member of this Committee by the Committee upon a seventy-five percent (75%) vote of the Committee present and voting at any meeting of the Committee, provided there is a quorum present, and such seventy-five percent (75%) vote must be made in person by such members and not by proxy; provided, further, that in order to bring the question before the Committee as to the removal of an officer, a petition requesting that such a vote be taken, bearing the signatures of at least fifty percent (50%) of the entire committee (no proxies allowed), shall be filed with the Chairman.”
Incredulously, Karamo is making the claim that no meeting can ever be valid unless she personally attends and gives that meeting her royal blessing.
“For example, Article V, Sec. A, paragraph 1 [of the MRP Bylaws] states: ‘The Chairman shall preside at all meetings of the Committee…’ and Chairwoman Karamo has made it clear that she will NOT be in attendance at the proposed invalid January 6th meeting,” the MRP stated in a Jan. 5 press release.
However, in Article V, Sec. B of the MRP Bylaws, it states that the Co-Chair “shall have like power as the Chairman in the absence of the Chairman, and shall perform such other duties as the Committee may determine.” Because Karamo neglected her duty, flouted the bylaws, and failed to appear at the lawful Jan. 6 State Committee meeting, her Co-Chair Malinda Pego stepped up and led the meeting in her absence. Pego is now the interim MRP Chair following Karamo’s removal. A full copy of the MRP Bylaws is available to review here.
The lesson from the Karamo debacle is that America First patriots need to properly vet their leaders and hold them to the same standard they would anyone else. It is not good enough for a leader to recite familiar talking points, pay lip service to “fighting the deep state,” and preach to the choir. Leaders must be competent, adept at raising funds, have the right temperament, and be able to bring the grassroots together rather than divide them.
When America First patriots place grossly unqualified individuals into important roles and then mindlessly support them despite their obvious failures, disaster can ensue – like what has happened in Michigan. President Trump urged Michigan Republican precinct delegates to reject Karamo as MRP Chair last year, but they thought they were smarter than Trump. Now the state is paying the price for this terrible mistake, as Karamo clings on to power and will attempt to cause as much damage as possible on her way out.
