While China is flaunting its formidable arsenal of state-of-the-art weaponry, capable of extinguishing the U.S. in under an hour, the U.S. Marine Corps’ top general is warning troops race and gender “diversity” are the “warfighting necessity” America needs to be militarily competitive against China and Russia.
China celebrated the 70th anniversary of Communist Party rule on Tuesday by unveiling the “ultimate Doomsday weapon,” hypersonic missiles that have the capacity to strike the United States in “thirty minutes with ten warheads,” showcasing its unparalleled military.
The military parade, designed to counter U.S. might, brandished tanks, drones, stealth bombers, unmanned underwater vehicles, and helicopters that rival U.S. Black Hawks during its parade in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, but the Dongfeng-41, which reportedly has the longest range than any other intercontinental ballistic missile in the world, was center stage.
“The Dongfeng-41 is a 7,672 mph intercontinental ballistic missile that is said to have the furthest range of any nuclear missile and could reach the US in 30 minutes,” the Sun reports.
According to Xinhua News, China’s state-run news agency, the DF-41 is a “mainstay of China’s strategic nuclear strength, play[ing] a vital role in strategic counterbalance, deterrence control and in winning [a] decisive victory.”
The display, highlighting China’s ever-rising defense budget and its long-term plan to diminish American superiority in Asia, indicates the United States military power is no longer unrivaled, warns Randall G. Schriver, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific security affairs.
“We’re no longer in a period of overwhelming American dominance but rather one in which our armed forces are adapting to fight against near-peer competitors who are fielding increasingly sophisticated capabilities,” Schriver told the Brookings Institution in Washington hours after the parade. “Instead of expecting to dominate an opponent, our armed forces are learning to expect to be contested throughout a fight while achieving the political objectives set for them.”
Meanwhile, Lt. Gen. Lori Reynolds, Deputy Commandant of Information, argued, just days before China’s lavish effort to project unprecedented military power, the United States will maintain global military dominance over its adversaries by ensuring its military is “diverse.”
“Diversity of thought will matter in the future fight,” Reynolds told 300 intelligence Marines at the 9th Annual Marine Corps Association and Foundation Intelligence Awards Dinner. “And I believe a dramatic mix of talent, of all races, religions, backgrounds and genders will be the difference in the future.”
Diversity will give the United States a military advantage its adversarial competitors, homogenous China and Russia, do not have, Reynold argued.
“We must talk about diversity as a warfighting necessity and tonight I’m declaring it essential to the information environment,” she added.
President Donald Trump offered only a message of congratulations to China in a tweet Tuesday morning:
However, the president has warned that China, which already ranks as an economic and manufacturing superpower, is a “threat to the world.”
“Obviously, China is a threat to the world in a sense, because they’re building a military faster than anybody,” Mr. Trump said, alongside Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison last month. “I view China in many different ways. But right now, I’m thinking about trade. But, you know, trade equals military.”
The president, who has closely tied economic policy and national security, has imposed tariffs on $360 billion of Chinese goods and plans to tax nearly all imports from China by the end of the year.
Trump wanted a military parade in the U.S. to observe France’s Bastille Day celebration, but critics complained the event would cost too much. Instead the president drew ire from the political left by hosting a “Salute To America” event on July 4, showcasing only military tanks.
