Rev. Al Sharpton has been on a speaking tour in Baltimore in an effort to defend Rep. Elijah Cumming’s record after President Trump criticized the Democratic lawmaker’s failed leadership of his poverty-ridden district.

However, Sharpton was not warmly received in Baltimore. In fact, locals are outraged by Sharpton’s visit.

Footage of one of Sharpton’s appearances show Baltimore residents confronting the MSNBC host as he condemned Trump’s attacks on Cummings.

“Elijah Cummings is a respected and well regarded member of Congress,” Sharpton said, before he was interrupted.

“You go back to New York! You bring that s*** to New York! You ain’t do nothing for Baltimore! You a phony!” a man interjected.

Another man interrupted Sharpton’s speech yelling, “Our schools are failing us! Where are you when our schools are failing us?”

“You’re just a hustler,” the man added.

In July, President Donald Trump blasted Cumming’s failed leadership in the Baltimore-area congressional district and claimed the Democratic lawmaker is a “racist.”

“Congressman Elijah Cummings has done a very poor job for his district and the City of Baltimore,” the president tweeted, warning the congressman has “failed badly.”

“If racist Elijah Cummings would focus more of his energy on helping the good people of his district, and Baltimore itself, perhaps progress could be made in fixing the mess that he has helped to create over many years of incompetent leadership,” Trump continued. “His radical “oversight” is a joke!”

After Trump referred to Cummings’ district as “a disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess” in which “no human being would want, ” Democrats resoundingly labeled him “racist.”

However, Baltimore homicides exceeded 300 each year from 2015 through 2018, and 2019 is on track to cross the 300 threshold for the fifth year in a row, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Furthermore, interviews with residents of Baltimore show they agree with Trump and are grateful the president is calling attention to the city’s corrupt leadership and impoverished conditions.
