Federal officials reported on Friday that a Toledo, Ohio, man has been charged with threatening to kill U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on a Facebook post last month that read, “She should be shot. Can’t fire me, my employer would load the gun for me.”
41-year-old Toledo native, Timothy Ireland not only posted threats online saying Ocasio-Cortez “should be shot,” but was found to be in possession of illegal ammunition. The U.S. Capitol Police started their investigation into Ireland on July 23rd, after receiving screenshots of the Facebook post according to court records. During a raid on Ireland’s home on Thursday, investigators located 7 bullets (three rounds of .32-caliber ammunition and four rounds of .45-caliber ammunition) inside his Kosciusko Avenue home in Toledo, but no guns were recovered.
Ireland told officials he always carries concealed firearms, and that his friends and family say he’s known to be an avid hunter. Court records also say Ireland told Capitol Police during a phone call on August 2nd that he was “very proud” of his threatening post on Facebook.
Ireland has a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge in Cook County, Georgia, and felony convictions in Sarasota County, Florida from dealing stolen property. An FBI history check also showed Ireland as having two outstanding warrants on both previous charges.
Ireland’s new charges include one count of possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, one count of being a fugitive in possession of a firearm, and one count of making interstate threats.
“There is absolutely no place in the marketplace of ideas for threats of violence against any person, especially those who are elected to represent the American people,” U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman said.
“Disagreement on political issues cannot lead to acts of violence, and if it does, we will seek federal prison time.”
Ireland is due in court next week. Ocasio-Cortez is yet to comment on the case.
