A Bronx man was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport Friday boarding a plane to the Middle East, where authorities say he planned to provide support to terrorists.

Delowar Mohammed Hossain “was charged in a criminal Complaint today with attempting to provide material support for acts of terrorism, specifically in support of killing U.S. nationals located overseas,” according to a Department of Justice press release.

Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C. Demers said that Hossain planned to fight for the Taliban in Afghanistan. Geoffrey Berman, U.S. Attorney General for the Southern District of New York confirmed Demers’ statement.

“As alleged, Delowar Hossain plotted to travel to Afghanistan to join the Taliban, specifically so he could commit acts of terrorism,” Berman said.  “Hossain wanted to kill Americans, and particularly wanted to target members of our armed forces, serving our nation overseas.  The excellent work of the FBI and NYPD stopped Hossain’s alleged deadly plan to join the Taliban before he took flight, and he now faces federal terrorism charges.”

Federal authorities first began tracking Hossain in late 2018, when he expressed interest in joining the Taliban. He allegedly attempted to recruit a confidential law enforcement informant to travel with him to Pakistan, then cross the border into Afghanistan for the purpose of joining the terror group. Hossain planned to fly to Thailand in order to avoid suspicion from authorities, then onto Pakistan. He allegedly purchased equipment for survival and fighting in Afghanistan, including walkie talkies and “trekking gear.” He also allegedly told the confidential informant to purchase weapons once he reached Afghanistan.

“I want to kill some kufars [non-believers] before I die,” he reportedly told the confidential informant.

Hossain stands charged with one count of attempting to provide material support for terrorism, which carries a maximum 15-year prison sentence.
